In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In vitro fertilization is the treatment process that enables the fertilization to be obtained by collecting mature eggs, which are female reproductive cells, and taking the eggs out of the body under general or local anesthesia, through vaginal ultrasound,after a certain period of using drugs and needles, and bringing these eggs together with sperm, which are male reproductive cells.

The fertilized eggs begin to divide and become embryos and then become two cells on the first day, four cells on the second day, and eight cells on the third day. It becomes compact on the fourth day and blastocyst on the fifth day. According to the number and quality of the embryos, it is placed in the womb of the expectant mother between the second and fifth days, and the pregnancy obtained after this stage is no different from the naturally occurring pregnancies. The difference from natural pregnancy is that the fertilization process is carried out under laboratory conditions, placed the fertilized eggs are back in the mother’s womb. Today, fertilization processes are applied by embryologists, and it is usually done by microinjection, which is the method of placing the sperm directly into the egg under the microscope. In this process, the success of fertilization is more successful than the classical IVF treatment.

How is IVF treatment done?

In vitro fertilization treatment, which is the method used by many couples in the treatment of infertility today; can be applied to couples who cannot have a baby naturally. The egg cell taken from the woman is mixed in with the sperm cell taken from the man in the laboratory environment. In this process, the womb of the expectant mother is being prepared for pregnancy. It may be necessary to use some medication and needles. One of the important factors affecting the success of IVF treatment is the psychological state of the mother and father-to-be, so the communication between the mother and father-to-be should be strong during the treatment process.

Who receives IVF treatment?

70% of the patients who apply to our Feminist Women’s Health and IVF Clinic are those who want to have children and those who want to receive IVF treatment. The reason for the emergence of IVF treatment is to have children who cannot have children naturally with other reproductive techniques. In vitro fertilization treatment is divided into groups as female-related, male-related, multiple causes, and unexplained causes. The main reasons related to women are as follows; blocked tubes, advanced age, low egg reserve(decreased ovarian reserve), uterus with polycystic ovary syndrome, ovarian and intra-abdominal surgeries. The main reasons related to men are; low sperm count, low motility, abnormal sperm morphology, or absence of sperm, which we call azoospermia. In vitro fertilization treatment is started in patients who cannot become pregnant despite all examinations being normal and IUI (vaccination) three times.

How long does the IVF process take?

Thanks to today’s medical technology and developing new drugs, after the injections that start on the second day of menstruation and last for about 10-12 days, the egg collection (retrieval) process, which we call OPU, is performed under anesthesia. On the same day, microinjection is performed with sperm taken from the spouse. After the procedure, fertilized eggs become embryos. Depending on the number and quality of the embryo, transfer (placement in the mother’s womb) is done between the second and fifth day. The pregnancy test date is 12 days after the transfer date.

How to prepare for successful IVF treatment?

Before starting IVF treatment, some points should be considered to prepare for both the treatment process and the pregnancy process in a qualified way. These can be listed as follows;

  • Alcohol and cigarette consumption should be avoided.
  • If you are on a diet to lose weight, the diet program should be abandoned.
  • Folic acid and similar mineral/vitamin supplements should be taken.
  • Stress should be avoided.
  • Necessary measures should be taken to protect the general health status.
  • A healthy diet should be applied.

To protect the health of both the mother and the baby, a healthy lifestyle should be adopted and the relationship between the couples should be strengthened.

When should IVF treatment be decided?

In vitro fertilization treatment is a method generally used by couples who have infertility problems, but it is also a treatment method frequently applied by elderly couples. In vitro fertilization can be applied in the following cases;

  • If you have infertility problems
  • If you have had sexually transmitted diseases before
  • If a spiral has been used before
  • If you have an ovarian cyst
  • If your fallopian tube is blocked
  • If you have menstrual irregularity

In the above cases, the chance of pregnancy by normal means is greatly reduced. For this reason, the chance of pregnancy is increased by applying methods such as vaccination(IUI) and in vitro fertilization. The success rate of IVF treatment is quite high compared to vaccination (IUI) treatment.
